Our
Grassroots Literacy Movement
I
CAN is a
nonprofit organization founded in 2002 by a former
Hillsborough County Schools Adult Educator equipped with a $100
donation, an education plan, and a lot of faith and determination to
improve literacy in Hillsborough County.
Today, I CAN is comprised of a compassionate group of literacy volunteers, professionals, community partners, and students. It is an innovative, quality-driven organization governed by a board of directors; financially directed by a certified public accountant; and managed by an executive director. I CAN Intensive Learning Programs were created to respond to the adult illiteracy and high school dropout problem in Tampa. The education program opened for enrollment on September 8, 2003, in honor of International Literacy Day. The reading literacy, basic education, Pre-GED, college tutoring & test-prep, workforce development and life skills services are funded by grants, student fees, fundraisers, public and corporate donations. I CAN is a relatively small community organization. The Learning Programs are located at Netpark Office Complex, Sanford Brown Institute, Second Floor, Room 205, at 5701 E. Hillsborough Avenue, Tampa, Florida. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 pm - 9 pm. |
