I CAN! Intensive Learning Programs

"Empowering Adults & Teens to Take Responsibility for their Education"

I CAN Intensive Learning Programs provide adults and teens (age 16 and older) one-on-one, small group, and self-directed instruction in reading literacy, basic education, Pre-GED, college-level tutoring and test-prep, workforce development and life skills training in a supportive, caring, student-centered learning environment. Following diagnostic testing, students receive an individualized learning plan at his/her level in the core content areas (reading, math, writing, science, and social studies).

I CAN uses structured, self-paced curricula provided by Pace Learning Systems, Inc., which include print and software-based learning programs that are correlated to state and national education standards. Each program contains step-by-step modules, life skills lessons, worksheets, practice tests, and mastery tests. Students are required to achieve a minimum 90% score on each module mastery test to progress to the next module.

The learning programs are correlated to standardized tests including: Test of Basic Adult Education (TABE), General Education Development (GED) Test, Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), College Placement Test (CPT), and Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FTCE - General Knowledge Test).  The academic, workforce development, and college ready curricula prepare students to obtain a high school diploma, and to enter and succeed in higher education, workforce, community, and in society.

Trained instructors, university and social service professionals, college students, and volunteer tutors from the community help to meet the diverse needs of students.  Program transition includes assistance to take the GED and other standarized tests, enroll or succeed in higher education or vocational training, enter the workforce, or advance to a better job. I CAN celebrates students' achievement at its annual cap-and-gown graduation and awards ceremony. The event recognizes students' success, and the support of staff, instructors, tutors, volunteers, board of directors, community partners, and donors.

Assessment Test

Students take the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) to determine their education levels in reading, math and language. The test results will determine their education plan. If a student has taken the TABE test within 3-months of admission in I CAN, and can bring a copy of the test to orientation, the test is not required. The TABE post test is given at scheduled times to assess students’ progress throughout the program.
