I CAN Literacy Tutor Your Compassion is Needed! According to the National
Institute for Literacy, one out of 4 adults age 16 and older in
Hillsborough County functions
at the lowest level of literacy (level 1). Most of these adults at
level 1 literacy cannot read well enough to perform various life
skills,
such as:
• Fill
out an application I CAN provides these adults a compassionate, supportive, learning environment to meet their special education needs. The success of our literacy program and our ability to increase literacy among these adults depend greatly on having committed and effective volunteer tutors. Your willingness to provide at least one day a week as a literacy tutor will transform someone’s life forever. |
Training (Video-Based, Self-Directed)

I
CAN offers
a multi-media tutor training program to provide tutors a structured,
time
effective approach to receiving a basic understanding of adult learning
and literacy, and instructional strategies to teach adult literacy
students. Teach An Adult to Read program includes 7 videos (30 minutes)
and a trainee workbook to enable tutors to receive individual,
self-paced instruction at their convenience.
