‘Food Fest’ Will Help Address Adult Literacy

By LEON B. CREWS

On Saturday, August 28th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., the I CAN Adult Literacy Program will sponsor a “Food Fest” at the University Area Community Center, 14013 North 22nd Street.

Featured will be great food prepared by Frank-El Restaurant, Wing Zone, Jerk Hut, The Border Mexican Grill, Nicolette’s Taste of the Tropics, Publix Bakery, and several professional chefs.

The public is asked to come and enjoy live dance groups and life gospel singing, as well as activities for adults and kids.

Tickets for the event are $15 for those 13 and older; $5 for those 5 to 12 years old, and anyone 4 and under will be admitted free.

The I CAN Adult Literacy Program was founded by Michelle Tate-Martin, who began pursuing adult literacy in 1995 after she decided to call it quits after 10 years in state government.

Mrs. Tate-Martin said in 1993, indicators showed 28% of adults 16 and older in Tampa read below the 4th grade level. “There are several factors responsible for those numbers. I also think technological advancements have created quite a gap. Many know nothing about computers.”

Mrs. Tate-Martin said when she first saw the illiteracy figures in Hillsborough County, she was angry. “We live in the wealthiest country in the world, and no one should be illiterate. I think there’s enough blame to pass around for illiteracy. We all have a responsibility.”

Right now in the I Can Adult Literacy Program, there are predominately African Americans, with only a few non-Blacks. Anyone interested in taking advantage of this program and improving their literacy skills, should call (813) 849-5595.
